Getting away from the desk

We’re not all lucky enough to work outside for a living, or have the flexibility to adjust our work schedules to take advantage of a sunny day. I have a desk job, just like so many people around the world. Our office doesn’t even have window (which is rough). But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a beautiful day when one comes along during the week!

Take Portland today – it’s the first time we’ve broken 70 degrees so far this year, and is one of the few and far between sunny days we’ve had since October last year. And I’m stuck looking at my computer until 3pm (it’s lunchtime now, so almost there). I love my job, but sometimes being inside all day is such a drag.

The solution? Find some time to get outside! I usually just eat lunch at my desk, but on nice days I like to go outside to eat and catch some rays. Or I take a short walk around campus, through the nearby forest, or down to the campus garden. Best of all, if your job allows leave a note at your desk and take a laptop outside. Find a sunny spot at a table or bench and work there for an hour or two.

Finding time to decompress during the day, especially if you’re working on a strenuous project or had a difficult meeting, can change your outlook on the entire day. I’m a designer and sometimes get in a creative slump. I’ll find myself toiling away at my desk, getting more and more frustrated, accomplishing nothing. If I take a walk for even 10 minutes, I often find that when I get back I can work again. For me, fresh air makes for fresh ideas, and helps dissolve anger and anxiety. I can almost feel my blood pressure dropping.

Can’t find time to get away during the work day? Set aside some time (30 minutes will do!) after work or after dinner. Not every day can be an adventure, but we can try to make most days enjoyable.

It’s not nature outside at work, but that doesn’t matter
