On Friday, my friend Taryn and I checked out Women’s Night at Planet Granite for an evening of bouldering, yoga and pizza in the Pearl. (Gentrification much? I had to convince myself to go, ugh.) But I went, and in the end was glad I did.
Being around a good-sized group of women determined to show the men around us that we can climb just as well as they can (some of us anyway, not me) was invigorating and inspiring. I talked to some really great people, and learned better bouldering techique – keep your arms straight, Ali! After climbing, we headed in for a relaxing yoga session, where I learned you should never ever do yoga with climbing chalk on your hands. Ouch.
It was nice to hear during the pizza gathering at the end of the evening that they were open to other names for the monthly event, to make sure it was clear the event was for all female-identifying individuals, and not aligned with a gender binary. The women in the group could have been much more diverse (as most groups of outdoor-minded people could always be). But there were a few non cis white ladies there, and it was good to hear the event organizers were trying.
Mostly, we were just a group of people looking for other people to climb and get outside with. And I succeeded! I made friends with a couple of other amazing ladies, and can’t wait to get together with them and have a good time building my climbing skills and enjoying the great outdoors. Being outside and sharing experiences and skills with other women is something I love, and always am looking for new opportunities to do so.
Rock on, ladies. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
